The military officer Thutmose left in the morning and returned late in the evening. He did not socialize with us much, but greeted us politely when he shared the same room with us while we ate late dinner. I had frequently noticed him observing us, careful not to show any emotion. Most of the time his eyes were on me, as if he was planning something. I had no doubt he was an intelligent man, and most likely had sent some report of our arrival to Akhetaten. What his reason was for concentrating on me, I did not know. Time would tell, no doubt.
"I'm not altogether happy with the way the man keeps staring at you," Diana said pleasantly as if she was just making conversation. "Still, it's kind of like he's trying to label you, to figure out who or what you are... he doesn't look like he's planning on assaulting you or anything."
"I know. It feels odd," I answered.
"Well, I'm not leaving your side, so he'd better not try anything or he might find his face getting rearranged a bit..." Diana smiled charmingly at me, and bit into a piece of bread.
