John was halfway through his spiral descent into depression over the business when his headlights started to flicker. “Damn it”, he muttered under his breath as he pulled the car over into the straightest part of the road he could see.
The cold immediately bit into his bones as it wrapped around him the moment he stepped out of the car. The leaves on the trees swayed and rustled in an otherwise silent night. He had expected that he would have heard an animal; something barking, snuffling or scuttling around. John’s stomach twisted with the unsettling silence.
