1 Corinthians 13:4
Love is patient
Dear Heavenly Father
You are the creator of love. You made all I see so you could have someone to share Your love with. There are so many things in this world that confuse me, like: why is there so much evil? I know love is the most attractive quality anyone can have. So, why don't more people try to reach out in love? What is there about wickedness that so many find hard to avoid? Grow me wise.
You give me a definition of love in Your Word that is quite all-encompassing. At least You didn't make me wait for the trait of patience in this list. It seems to be the most endearing quality I find in others, but I discover it's hard to practice in my own life. I thank You for Your patience towards me. I would have given up on me many times by now. Grow me long.
Give me a long-term perspective for my life. I seldom look past the here and now. Give me Your eyes that maintain an eternal view. I have a propensity to want to get past a problem and go on to the next thing in my life. You want to use my problems as teaching lessons. Help me see the changes You want me to make. Bring me into a deeper relationship with You through Jesus. Transform me into His image. Grow me deep.
Give me the patience to grow slowly, like an oak tree. I long to be able to endure life's storms and still be standing. Use me to shelter others from the heat and provide food for their souls so they can continue on. Help me see the futility in growing quickly so I don't have the substance needed to maintain my footing during the hard times. Grow me strong.
Help me wait for others. Sometimes they can't keep up with me, slow me down for them. Often their agenda is different than mine, show me their perspective. Frequently they're going a direction away from me, grant me the grace to let them go. Many walked away from Jesus as He collected followers. Grow me gracious.
It's because of Jesus' patient love for me I pray this. AMEN
