After a cool bath, Laura put on one of her dresses that she had accidentally left behind when she moved to the cottage. Laura went downstairs to see Jenny and embraced her. She was very grateful her child was safe. Tears slowly trickled down her cheeks. Not thinking, she clutched Jenny tightly in her arms as she whispered, “I’m so thankful my baby is fine.”
Bradford had quietly entered the room and witnessed the scene. As he started to leave the room, Jenny wiggled free and ran up to him, saying, “Is Scamp okay? How are Tabby and her kittens?”
Quickly regaining her composure, Laura turned around to find Bradford’s inquisitive eyes staring hard at her. Then he lifted Jenny in his strong arms, as he said, “Scamp is warm and safe in the barn. The stable-boy will take you to see him along with Tabby’s new kittens now if you’d like.” When he placed Jenny on the floor, she ran out of the room behind the stable-boy. Laura and Bradford heard her chatter far down the hall as she asked an endless number of questions about the kittens.
