Downstairs, doors slammed. Sandra and Cindy pounded up the steps. Just as Sandra hit the door with an armload of school supplies, Kelsey shot me a pointed look and clicked off the Internet.
"We went to Wal-Mart," Sandra announced. She dropped her supplies on Kelsey's bed. "I have a new journal. I was on the last page of my old one." She pulled a hardbound notebook with purple flowers on it out of the shopping bag. A moment later, purple pen in hand, she looked expectantly at Kelsey and me.
"So spill," Sandra said. "What's high school in Elm Grove like?"
"Big," I said. "Busy."
"The cafeteria was packed during our break. We barely found a place to sit," Kelsey added.
Sandra wrote something in her notebook. "Did you make friends?"
Kelsey grinned and rolled her eyes. "Kindra did."
I gave Kelsey a look and ducked my head.
Sandra gripped the pen. "Who?"
"Matt is just a boy I met while taking placement tests. He sat with us in the cafeteria," I said.
"A boy!" Sandra's eyes were shining. "Matt," she said while busily writing. "So is he cute?"
"He's okay," I said. "I don't know him that well."
