Mickey’s heart was touched by the events of the day. He felt it was time to tell Emma everything, words he’d waited many years to say to her. She had grown into a beautiful woman, and was so smart. He liked that she’d been involved, been a leader with the moving scene in the lobby. She had the qualities of his Laura, but times had improved for women. And those changes were reflected in her. She had been surrounded by strong minded people all through her life. Ben and Katie had been a good choice for her to begin her existence. Sadness came over him as he thought of them. He had loved them, but their demise was not his fault. Life is predetermined, he thought. He certainly had been proof of that. He’d had a painful death, but at least he’d saved his Laura from harm that night.
He remembered back to that day in the deep of the winter when he’d willed the hunter’s gunshot to revenge his killer. Maybe Ben was right about him when he’d asked if he was the Angel of Death, he didn’t know. He’d been consumed with finding a way to be with his Laura, and had used any means to do so. Of course, he surmised that the thug’s death had been for him and not Laura. Nostalgia seemed to be consuming him that day. Perhaps it was something Pablo’s death had done to his thinking. That young man had become a symbol for the people around him to feel their strength. His death had helped them to be courageous, rather than bow to fear. It had been an amazing spectacle to watch, and he attributed much of the credit to Emma.
