On an Aspen skiing holiday, Garth Wainwright’s business partner is killed on the slopes. The sheriff and coroner call it an accident. Wainwright has reason to believe it was murder. His bull-headedness, a driver of his business success, demands Wainwright to find the motive. His other partners discourage his involvement. None believe the murder scenario. But Wainwright must know the reason for the murder. Digging through files he stumbles onto evidence of a massive fraud. Millions of dollars were embezzled from his firm. Should this be reported, the SEC will shut the firm down, forcing it out of business and Wainwright and his partners will go to prison and never work in the investment business again. The fraud trail leads to one or more of Wainwrights partners. But which one was complicit? Are the fraud and the murder related? Who can he trust? And then, another of his partners is murdered. Wainwright now fears for his life.

The Assassin waits on his target
The preceding paragraphs have set up the tension; who is this guy? who is he waiting on? why does the target deserve to die? The answer to the last question is easy. He doesn't deserve to die. Burke is one of the good guys in the CapVest stable. We'll learn a bit later why he's been targeted, but not by whom. The Assassin is a paid killer, on assignment in Aspen and Thomas Burke is the guy that has his attention. This is the hook that pulls Wainwright into the mystery. He liked Burke, but more than that, he knew of no reason for Burke's murder. Wainwright wants to know the reason, but he is rebuffed by his other partners. This had the effect of driving him deeper into the mystery. That is how he discovered the first viable clue to the murder. And then another partner is murdered.
Introduction to the Assassin
I wanted his introduction to the story to be dramatic and a surprise. Who would suspect that an internationally known killer-for-hire would select a ski resort for an assassination? The point of why I chose this method. Later, we learn a bit of the background on this guy. An interesting side-bar: Many readers found the Assassin to be their favorite character. That's not the way I planned it, but hey, who am I to disagree with my readers? As a matter of fact, because of that, the Assassin has a significantly larger role in the sequel, Inside Moves which will be out in April, 2016.
