How Do You Create Romance?

I've found, when writing romance, the best way to develop relationships is to let the personalities of the characters you have brought together naturally evolve. The two souls have a story to tell, and usually that story is hidden in the quiet moments they share with one another as they learn who each other is and work to achieve their shared goals. Or, in my books, in between moments where they're exploding soulless creatures into black goop, jumping into danger without concern for their own safety to protect others...or running for their lives.

It's Getting Hot in Here

While Immortal Vegas and the Wilde Justice series are Urban Fantasies, the Demon Enforcers series is a fairly steamy Paranormal Romance. This tidbit from Demon Unbound is just a taste of the heat that sparks between Maria and Warrick!

The Syx - A Spinoff?

The demons from the Demon Enforcers series do first appear in the Immortal Vegas series, yes! And I hadn't intended to tell the story of the Syx, but they kept staring at me impatiently. And their eyes glow. It's unnerving. I also have long been fascinated with the darker side of the metaphysical realm, because we are all in the end divine creations...so how does one devolve from that into a demon, and what does being a demon truly mean? These were the thoughts I had as I dove into creating the Syx.

Wilde Fire

Science Fiction & Fantasy

It's the end of the world as we know it... The war on magic is here, and Mistress of the House of Swords Sara Wilde has done everything she can to prepare. The Arcana Council has recalled its most powerful members to hold the line, and the Houses of Magic are frantically strengthening their defenses. Then the first volley hits: a plague of demons freed to ravage the earth. Scrambling, Sara discovers that the war will be fought not on one front, but three--while new threats emerge at a breakneck pace. All the magic in the world may not be enough to save it. From an ancient coven in Chicago to the sunbaked streets of Vegas to the frozen ice fields of Antarctica, Sara rallies her closest friends and fiercest enemies to protect the earth from the gods and monsters raining down from the dark side of the veil. To succeed, Sara must confront the truths she's been avoiding her whole life, and take on forces that have kept the Connecteds powerless for far too long. But is she willing to make the ultimate sacrifice? When it comes to Armageddon, where there's smoke there's always Wilde Fire.

Memory Lane

I knew that in Wilde Fire I wanted to bring the first arc of the Immortal Vegas series to an end so that we could survive (mostly) the War on Magic that is the main focus of the first ten books, and also introduce a sort of "Season 2" for the characters. The Wilde Justice series takes Sara and her colleagues to a whole new level, as they deal with the ramifications of a world in which magic has gone a little wild.

Why Tarot?

I was given my first Tarot deck when I was a teenager, and was hooked on the rich imagery and resonance of the cards. I learned each of them so that I could begin doing readings for myself and others, but over the years my understanding of the cards' nuances (particularly as they work together in a reading) has grown by leaps and bounds. I knew when I wanted to launch my first Urban Fantasy series, that Tarot would play a significant role. Sara works with the cards unconventionally. In addition to reading the cards for their underlying meanings, she uses certain elements from their imagery as clues to help her in her search for arcane artifacts. For example, the Four of Swords depicts a knight asleep on a flat ledge, his hands folded in prayer, beneath a stained glass window and hanging swords. In a Sara Wilde reading where she's looking for an artifact, the card could represent a church or hospital, or that she should lay down and look up to see what she most needs to find--it all depends on the other cards and the nature of wherever she currently is!
