Deceived (Burned, #2)

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Arabella Anthony has everything she’s ever wanted: money, power, and a place at the side of Tampa’s most eligible bachelor, Alejandro Guerrero. Sure he’s ruthless, manipulative, and controlling but he understands and values her – and her rare ability to see lies. A power some would do anything to possess and even more to control. When a chance meeting and a devastating loss force her to face the truth, she searches for a way out of the life she thought she wanted. But deception weaves a tangled web and Arabella realizes that sometimes the easiest person to lie to is yourself.

Exposed Tidbit

In this scene Zak's "friend" is actually his patient, Fiona, who is the main character for Exposed, the third book in the Burned series. This is one of two quasi-crossover scenes between Exposed and Deceived. I like to keep it fresh, fill in the blanks between the two books but not rewrite entire scenes. I felt a hint was enough. Zak wasn't ready to give up the spotlight and is featured heavily in the beginning of Exposed. He's her biggest supporter as she navigates the drastic changes in her life thanks to her growing powers.

Burned was meant to be a standalone

Burned was meant to be a standalone. Arabella Anthony was just an interesting side character...at first. I enjoyed her personality and attitude so much that I ended up changing the ending of Burned and creating an entire book, Deceived, just so I could keep her around and explore her relationship with Alejandro. As with most books, this one started out with a question: Why would a ballbuster like Arabella stay with an evil jerk like Alejandro. In this scene I tried to set up her fierce personality, she's not one to back down from a confrontation. She's not one to take shit from any man. She knows her worth. It sets up the contrast to her relationship to Alejandro...

Not a Morning Person

This scene was inspired by a long, early morning wait at an auto repair shop. The chairs were uncomfortable, the coffee horrendous, and I was in a foul mood. I'm not a morning person under the best of circumstances, add in a couple hundred dollars in unplanned car repairs and crappy coffee and it's a million times worse. The forced down-time was good for some scenes though. I ended up with a really productive writing day.
