Plot complication introduced

OR-7 is the name given to western Oregon's first documented wolf in over 100 years. Reading about him is all it took for me to vow to incorporate a wolf into the Lake Serene series. Long before the wolf makes an appearance, I set the stage by having Haley and Shaw discuss the possibility that the predator might be sharing the wilderness with them. What do I mean, might?

Seasons Heartbeat: Fall (Lake Serene Romance)

Romance

Fall. For years Terron Sax was responsible for and dedicated to others and can finally put himself first. He doesn't want to hear about waitress Kolina Childs' concern for the stray she calls Shadow. He'll enjoy her company while keeping his emotions locked away. Kolina doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, just that the longer she's in the mountains, the more connected she feels to them. She'll talk to Terron about a homeless dog, wolf rumors, even about their growing physical attraction. What she won't do is let him get close to her heart. An injury ends her waitressing days. Even though doing so brings up unwanted memories, Terron responds to her concerns about her future. He also takes her in his arms, spends the night with her. By morning light, fear swamps Kolina. The only man she ever loved died suddenly. She will not be hurt again! Then the mountain—or is it a wolf—takes Shadow.

Start of an adventure

Kolina doesn't know what to make of happy-go-lucky Terron. He seems content to live in the moment while she keeps asking herself what she's going to do with the rest of her life. In this scene, she has just agreed to test the equipment Terron has been working on. She believes the contraption will pull her and the massive inner tube to the top of the hill so she can slide back down where hopefully he'll stop her before she crashes. What neither of these future lovers realizes is that 'something' capable of changing their lives waits up in the trees.

Seasons Heartbeat: Summer (Lake Serene Romance)

Romance

Summer brings with it memories of the day firefighter Echo Rose nearly lost her life. She devotes herself to protecting her beloved trees and sheltering her heart. After contractor Rey Bowen's career imploded, he had no choice but to work at Lake Serene's small resort. He resents the restrictions Echo places on the project. Echo doesn't want to care about Rey but his dedication and commitment is the same as what drives her. Rey realizes he isn't the only one whose self-confidence has been shaken. Barriers collapse and secrets are revealed followed by vulnerability and regret. It's too much too soon. Or is it? Then Rey is offered the job of a lifetime—one that will take him far away.

talking for the first time

Revealing character while focusing on plot while helping readers feel as if they're part of the story is quite the balancing act. In this scene I needed to make it clear that Echo Rose and Rey Bowen have two very different agendas and are carrying around separate emotional baggage. At the same time I didn't want things to be too heavy for this pair which is why chipmunks often show up when they're together. That's one of the benefits about having a wilderness setting--wild critters fit right in.

Seasons Heartbeat: Spring (Lake Serene Romance)

Romance

As Alisha Hearne studies the family cabin, she's surrounded by painful memories and yet the solitude speaks to her. The resort across the lake from Alisha’s cabin represents one thing to Nate Quaid—where he earns a living. Once his work here is finished he’ll move on as he has done ever since a barred door unlocked years ago. Despite their reservations, loneliness and need bring them together but are they capable of revealing their deepest secrets? Of asking for understanding and forgiveness?

Not exactly a cute meet

For some, spring is a magical time in the wilderness. Others, however, need a special person to help them experience that magic. When Alisha and Nate met I wanted to demonstrate their superficial differences. While Alisha carries complex memories of the time she spent here deep inside her, Nate simply needs to feel free. Obviously they will both change and grow as they dare to fall in love but in the beginning, all Alisha wants to do is shake some sense into this handsome and impulsive man.

Seasons Heartbeat: One Day (Lake Serene Romance)

Romance

One Day. (novella) Five years ago Jes and Shyla Croft spent their honeymoon at Lake Serene. Now they've returned to end their marriage. The love that once completed them died under the demands of Jes's business and Shyla's loneliness. Instead of quickly ending their time together, they spend hours searching for the wilderness' wildlife for Shyla to photograph. No matter what went wrong between them, they still share a love of nature. Then Jes hands Shyla a piece of paper that will make more of an impact on their futures than divorce papers.

Back together

There is no Lake Serene in Oregon but it I created it from the love I have for the wilderness lake where my family has long had a summer cabin. Seasons Heartbeat: One Day brings a divorcing couple back to where they spent their honeymoon and I wanted the magical setting to remind them of what they once had and maybe give them hope for the future. The novella also serves as an introduction to the four-book series (each story focuses on a different couple during a different season). If I've succeeded, readers will understand this special place's spell and why love is possible here.
