When Kaber is killed right in front of Mathonwey, he is thrust into a race against time to solve the murder and find another source of nyepsium. With only a couple days nyepsium, his trusty familiar Ogma, and a few weapons, Mathonwey is set against unknown enemies in a race against time. If he loses, he is certain to fail his one and only chance to make Adept, have his hand cut off, and be cast out of the Institute forever.

Mat studies the dagger used to kill Kaber. He does not like what he sees. The dagger is an assassin's tool covered with arcane symbols and dark spells. In this passage, Mathonwey realizes that he is up against a serious opponent, even though he has no idea who that may be. What he does know is that the last supplier of nyepsium has just been killed and he needs to find more or there is no way he will pass his Adept exam.

Mathonwey, unable to secure help from his best friend Barish, tries out his next best option. He seeks an extra few Nyepsium seeds from Professor Aeron, who he knows once conducted an experiment with those who use Nyepsium to gain access to magic. The subsequent exchange reveals much about how the Nyepsium seed is viewed by their society.
A Favor
Faced with a serious shortage of nyepsium seeds, Mathonwey asks Barish for a favor. He doesn't want to reveal too much for fear that Barish will say no. But if he fails to reveal enough, it will certainly get awkward when Barish realizes the truth.
