The Human Cure

Romance

Kate Plesser is leading a dead-end life as an office assistant with a penchant for bad relationships. She is lost. When Kate is kidnapped by Hunter, a gorgeous stranger, she assumes he is just some sick psychopath. She never suspects he is actually a vampire, and that she is about to be plunged into a world stranger than her wildest dreams. In the underground city where Hunter lives, she encounters his otherworldly cousin Chase, who holds the key to her freedom. She is thrust into a village where humans are farmed for feeding and breeding. In this mysterious new world beneath Queens, New York, Kate finds something she never expected.

A Lack of Perspective

I really enjoy this passage because it highlights some of the attitude as well as some of the confusion that Chase has about humans. Kate is terrified and being taken into a new sort of reality, but Chase is also tentative because in many ways he has no clue how to behave in a social situation. He has lived his life among his vampire kin, most of whom are solitary creatures, and here comes this bold and irritating creature who is not food for him and yet not his equal in his eyes. He has absolutely no idea how to handle it. Against his better judgment, he finds himself considering her point of view. Perspective taking and theory of mind are fascinating subjects to me because I work with children who have social deficits, where thinking about the feelings of others doesn’t come naturally to them. In a way, Chase is a lot like that and these are all new feelings and inconveniences for him.
