Has Sarah, in her single-minded determination to create a career for herself, neglected her son so much that she no longer knows him? Introducing Sarah Newby

Sarah Newby is an independent barrister - a British trial lawyer. She is the main character of a legal thriller series which some readers have kindly compared to the works of John Grisham and Michael Connelly, but set in a British context. Sarah has fought her way up from a tough innercity area in Leeds, in the north of England. She was a teenage single mother who left school at fifteen, and only through her own fierce determination has she managed to scrape herself an education and a career in the fiercely competitive world of criminal law. In this extract we see her in court facing what seems like an impossible case - defending a brutal, unpleasant man accused of raping a single mother, a woman very like Sarah herself. Yet although she is disgusted by her client - who is also suspected of several murders - it is her job to defend him, and that is what she intends to do. Read on to see how she copes with this , and what happens next.
