Our Porcelain Faith (Clean Version)

Literature & Fiction

A skeptical guitarist at a career crossroads. A Christian singer at a crossroads of faith. Now two weeks and three shows together will decide everything for them. Bryan Lane is standing at a crossroads. Just kicked out of the rock band he founded ten years ago, the gifted guitarist and songwriter ponders what's next. Through a series of coincidences, Bryan reluctantly agrees to play with a Christian singer named Cassie McCourt, who's in desperate need of a guitarist for the last four shows of her tour. At first glance, Cassie seems like a typical Christian performer: peppy, positive, and squeaky clean. But Cassie proves to be full of surprises as a darker side lurks beneath her pristine image. And the non-religious Bryan's very presence on tour shakes up the status quo, placing Cassie squarely within the bullseye of her Christian audience. As Bryan tries to understand why Cassie is teetering on the edge of disbelief and his feelings for her intensify, he finds himself moving ever so slowly back to his childhood faith. In the end, Cassie and Bryan are faced with crucial decisions that will shape not only their professional careers, but also who they are and will become. Porcelain Faith is a novel that wrestles with faith, doubt, and the spaces inbetween.

Across the Western Sky

Teens

She’s believes. He doesn’t. In an us vs. them world, can their love survive? High school seniors Curt and Hannah barely know each other and never speak. In fact, the two are more likely to see each other as adversaries, as their families reside on different sides of a controversial issue dividing their small town. Hannah’s father, the Reverend Caleb Wilson, wants to erect a monument to the Ten Commandments on public space. Opposing these efforts is Curt’s atheist activist father Matt. But when tragedy strikes, leading to an emotionally charged encounter between Curt and Hannah in an empty school hallway, the two can’t stop thinking about each other. Numerous obstacles stand in the way of the fledgling couple. Curt’s friends and family warn him against getting too close to the beautiful but devout Christian. She’s too different, they tell him. Hannah’s family and friends are similarly concerned with the amount of time she’s spending on Curt. Chief among them is Jake, a would-be suitor from her church who’s none too pleased with the attention she’s lavishing on his rival. Despite all this, neither Curt nor Hannah can deny the attraction drawing them together, even as everyone else tries to pull them apart. Meanwhile, tensions in the town tighten around them, threatening not only their relationship, but their very lives. Can love trump the differences that divide the two? Or will Curt and Hannah succumb to the same forces pulling their town apart?

Divided We Stand

Everyone can see the United State is divided. Red state, blue state. Republican, Democrat. Many of these differences also fall along religious lines. Across the Western Sky is a YA novel about star-crossed lovers: Curt, an atheist, falls for Hannah, a devout Christian. But it's also a story about a splintered community, currently divided by a religious controversy. Hannah and Curt are caught in the middle. But not only does the novel ask, "Can these two people overcome their differences?", it asks, "Can the different factions of this community find any common ground together?" I treat both sides with respect and sympathy and refuse to strawman either group. Perhaps this book can help people see those who disagree with them with a little more charity and understanding.

A story of Star-Crossed Lovers.

Love is easy when it's right, some people say. Others say that love is the hardest thing you could do. Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. This is the story of a love that's definitely both easy and hard.

Awkward Invitations

Never talk about politics or religion people always say. However, for the main characters in "Across the Western Sky", that's almost impossible, as religion and town politics seem to be the principal elements defining their families. And while Hannah might not be allowed to date Curt, she can invite him to church. What could go wrong with that?

Objects of Anger

Anger is a fundamental human emotion. We get angry at friends, families, spouses, and even God or the universe. Many times, we direct our anger at people who aren't necessarily the reason we're mad to begin with. Nevertheless, they become the focus of our fury, leading to catastrophic results. Across the Western Sky is a story about people trying to deal with their anger by putting others in the crosshairs. Tensions between people escalate, making the unthinkable possible.

The Moment

In every relationship, there's a "moment" when everything changes. Lines are crossed. In a good way. Things buried beneath the surface bubble out and the truth can no longer be ignored. For the two characters in this scene - Curt and Hannah - that moment comes in an empty hallway in school. But their undeniable attraction toward one another will be one more spark threatening to set off the powder keg forming in their little town.

Thunder and Lightning. Very, very frightening

Lightning. Thunder. A tree-lined road. Life often comes down to seconds. But it's not just what happens in those short moments that matters, it's also how we interpret what happens. For Curt and his father, a split-second will change everything, setting events into motion far beyond their control. Is this event that befalls them the random motion of a chaotic universe or the all-knowing and all-powerful hand of God?
