And so they finally meet

This is the last part of chapter one, the part where Lady Sarah and Viscount Spencer become acquainted with each other and where Lady Sarah forgets her manners completely at the sight of the man who has unwittingly been annoying her. The scene allows for them to become better acquainted in chapter two when Sarah convinces Spencer that he must help her find her hamster since it's obviously his fault that Snowball went missing in the first place. Fun banter and quarreling follow.

Lady Sarah meets Viscount Spencer

Lady Sarah has been brought to Thorncliff to meet the suitor that her parents have chosen for her, and to make a match that will hopefully help her family put Sarah'spast indiscretion behind them. Sarah is determined to abide by her parents' wishes, especially for the sake of her younger sisters who have yet to make their debut in Society. But then she happens upon Viscount Spencer in the conservatory and everything changes.

Thorncliff's treasure

This piece of dialogue gives the reader a little bit of background about Thorncliff. It also suggests a deeper connection between the Heartly family and the estate's former owner. But is there really a treasure hidden away somewhere behind Thorncliff's walls? As Fiona says, she's quite determined to find it.

Lady Sarah

This is the scene in which Lady Sarah appears for the first time. She and her father, stepmother and stepsisters are in a carriage on their way to Thorncliff Manor, but the relationship between Sarah and her parents is strained. They cannot forgive her for the mistake she once made and continuously remind her of the shame she's brought upon the family.

How it all began

I've selected this excerpt because it not only sets the tone for the book while offering a bit of information about the plot, but also because it introduces the hero, Christopher Heartly. The dialogue here is light, infused with a sense of humor that's prevalent to all of my books.
