Learning to love your enemy

It may seem like I chose this passage because it’s kind of a sexy bath scene, but that’s not why I picked it. My reason goes beyond the obvious to delve deeper into the budding relationship between my two main characters. Sunny and Jack are natural born adversaries. Segregated since birth by social inequality and the physical barriers that exist between their two worlds, Sunny has nothing but hatred for his people and he holds only disdain for hers. Yet when they’re forced to work together for their very survival, they learn that stripped of their differences they’re really both just human beings. By the time they end up in a common bathroom, self-consciously naked and sharing a bar of soap, their bond of trust has grown enough to support their budding relationship. This building block of trust not only lays the foundation for a great love affair, but also a bridge that spans the gap between her world and his. Overcoming prejudices and breaking down barriers are at the heart of the Sunset Rising series. Although it begins as a dystopian tale, the series as a whole is about the pursuit of utopia in a post apocalyptic world.
