THE WRITING SHED

Literature & Fiction

The Writing Shed tells the story of Robert Padam who, prompted by his discovery of a letter which has remained unopened for over thirty years, spurns his mundane job and heads for Laugharne, the small town in Wales that was Dylan Thomas’ final resting place. The poet was the hero of Padam’s adolescence in the late 1960’s but has become a reproachful ghost to him as the years have passed. Compelled by the letter and the slow death afforded by his present existence, Padam inevitably explores his past in the hope of finding his future. But he never imagines the grave to which he is drawn this day could be his own…

ENTRANCES AND DEATH

October 27th – Birthday of Dylan Thomas, Sylvia Plath and ROBERT PADAM. At least he’s still alive. Sort of. Perhaps he’s having a mid-life crisis, but then he’s felt this way for years, ever since he got out of the psychiatric hospital, rescued by EMILY, now his wife. He’s on his way to work as usual. Except today he has an unopened letter in his pocket, rediscovered the previous evening. It was written to him over thirty years before, by KATJA, the American girl who was the love of his life, after he failed to meet her in Seattle as they’d arranged. Memories engulf him as he drives. Before he realises it, Padam turns the car in the direction of Laugharne, Thomas’ final resting place. The poet was the hero of Padam’s adolescence but has become a reproachful ghost to him as the years have passed…
