The Oligopoly of Marijuana
Don't have $2M to spend on a business startup? Should the government be picking winners and losers in commerce? Because that's what is happening as marijuana "legalization" (quotes, because it's technically "regulation") rolls out across the US. CT picked four winners to cultivate all of the state's pot; MA picked 20, IL will pick 21. Although the regulatory bodies do this to keep their new programs under control, this level of market experimentation is unprecedented. On the consumer side, too, we have an oligopsony as only a portion of citizens qualify to buy. Getting the balance right is a nearly impossible trick to pull off successfully. Add a 30% tax (CO) and all this monkeying around means the black market will continue to exist.
Marijuana is Not a Four Letter Word
Instead of seeing the distaste for the word, "marijuana," decrease since I wrote these words, I have seen it become more commonplace--among industry professionals and regulators. For no good reason. These people, more than any others, should know better. Furthermore, the use of marijuana is an appropriate homage to the country that has perhaps suffered the most from its prohibition: Mexico. Don't be afraid to use the word marijuana!
