A Thirst for War

Romance

A Thirst for War is an historical work of fiction centered on the planning and destruction of the Cumberland River Railroad Bridge in Clarksville, TN. Interwoven into the story is a haunting love story that adds dramatic tension to the plot. The heroine is a strong, willful woman (Lydia Martin) who is involved with two men: the protagonist (John Ulysses Martin) and a Yankee Lieutenant (Lawrence Wallace). Lydia is also beautiful and intelligent. Ahead of her time in regard to a woman’s role in society, this very modern character widens the scope and appeal of the book, and ultimately allows the protagonist to complete his mission when failure seems imminent.

After the amputation of his leg, John lies dying.

Death reaches out his hand and beckons John to cross the line, to come and join the Angels. Everything points to his demise, but it is a loving Lydia who prevents his leaving this earth.

Undying love

Despite his previous fight with Lydia -- she'd called him an ox for wanting to join Lee's army -- John still loves her. Deep down inside, he transposes her words, "I'll always love," making them his own.
