When Paul Forte is indicted by a federal grand jury, everyone suspects prosecutor Bernard (don’t call him “Bernie”) Kilroy has more on his mind than justice. Then the FBI agent in charge of Paul’s case gives him a clue to the mystery: Kilroy is bent on settling an old family score, and he’s not above breaking the law to do it. Paul is already dealing with the death of his parents and divorce from a woman he still loves. Now, with the support of an alluring grand juror, Paul must expose the vindictive prosecutor’s own corruption before the jury renders a verdict on his Osso Buco.
As Paul nears his trial, he begins to get occasional prank calls from someone who is obviously enjoying his agony. We've all been so exhausted that we just can't be bothered with the dire future we face. Every once in a while, "$#%^% it" is an eloquent way to approach life.
An awful lot happens in this novel over food and drink, especially when it comes to Paul's complicated love life. Here, Paul is trying to move on from his divorce, but his feelings for his ex-wife make it difficult. When Paul finally hooks up with Shannon, and then Kate comes back in the picture, we learn some things about Shannon we wouldn't have expected.
This passage introduces us to our hero's nemesis, U.S. Attorney Bernard (don't call him Bernie) Kilroy, as Paul prepares to be questioned before a federal grand jury investigating his friend for "influence peddling."
