Letters from Wishing Rock - a novel with recipes

Literature & Fiction

What would happen if everyone in town lived in the same building? Ruby Parker is about to find out. Her fiancé has left her and she needs a fresh start, so she moves to Wishing Rock, Washington, a small town on Dogwinkle Island, where she meets a quirky cast of characters who quickly become family. Letters between the neighbors and their friends chronicle the twists and turns of the characters' daily lives. There's Jake, a charming first-year medical student who catches Ruby's eye from the start, despite his being over a decade younger. Millie, a Wishing Rock resident for forty years, runs the town's library, post office, newsletter and grocery store, knows everyone and everything, and shares the history of the area with her playful wit. World traveler and psychic Alexandra bestows insight and wisdom with humor and compassion, and Ruby's Gran heads to the United Kingdom, heeding her own advice to seize the day. And then there's Ed; if something fun is going on, the grandson of the town's founding father is likely at the center of it. Amidst all this action, Ruby manages to find passion and companionship, but will she be able to open her heart to love? Online dating, a group trip to Scotland, a discussion about dogwinkles, a fateful hoedown, and friendships old and new, all interspersed with recipes from some of the town's best cooks, make Wishing Rock come alive in this delightful and insightful look at life, love, relationships, and community.

The inception of Wishing Rock

This excerpt is from near the beginning of the first book in the Wishing Rock series, Letters from Wishing Rock. The Wishing Rock books are told in letters back and forth between the characters. Millie Adler is a woman who has lived in Wishing Rock since almost the beginning, and she knows everyone and everything! Here she's telling the grandmother of a new resident how Wishing Rock came to be. She's the town historian and quite a character - later, we get to hear her own story, which made me cry when I wrote it! :)

Pam on the Map: Iceland

Travel

From setting off a hotel fire alarm, to getting a luxurious in-water spa massage, to going on a “traditional Icelandic ice cream car ride,” to interviewing Jón Gnarr, “the most interesting mayor in the world,” Pam experienced it all on a two-week summer journey that took her all around the outer edge of Iceland. Armed with a two-wheel drive car, a persnickety GPS, and a goal to discover the heart and soul of the country, Pam broke out of the boundaries of Iceland’s popular Golden Circle to travel the full Ring Road (the road that circles all the way around the country), and beyond. In Pam on the Map: Iceland, Pam brings readers along on her trip as she discusses all things Iceland, including the restrooms at Keflavík airport, the Ring Road and travel infrastructure, the treacherous gravel roads and Highway 939, the omnipresent waterfalls, hot dogs and fermented shark, and the history and culture of the country and its people. Pam stops to talk with locals about their views and opinions on Iceland, tourism, writing, the economy, soil erosion, and happiness. Filled with wit and wanderlust, Pam on the Map: Iceland offers one woman’s perspective on traveling around this tiny island in the far north Atlantic Ocean.

Meeting Car Rental Guy

My first morning in Iceland, I haven't slept a wink since the day before when I boarded the plane in Seattle. I'm exhausted and about to drive around this foreign land, and the man who is going to make it all possible is Car Rental Guy. We get off to a rough start when he's late, but as soon as we meet, he's my guy! He gave me so much good information, and a great introduction to the country I was about to discover. He's referenced many times through the book. Who knew one person could make such an impact on a trip?!
