A bookstore that keeps more than dusty old tomes on its shelves, a phantom limb that can reach into the next world, a comic that colors people's lives with terror, graves unable to hold their wares, a collector of haunted artifacts who gets more than he bargains for, a deserted northern highway that brings back a man's worst childhood fears, an encounter with the bogeyman and more. This collection of chilling fiction and disturbing poetry from the dark mind of Mark Leslie includes previously published award nominees along side original works.
Phantom Mitch is a story that I wrote after reading an article about some soldiers who had lost limbs and had been experiencing the concept of a phantom limb - sensations such as an itch on the limb that no longer existed. I wondered if the limb might exist in the "after life" and thus they were experiencing something that was beyond the perception of most people. And, what might happen if a man lost both his arm and his wife. Would he be able to connect with his dead wife using that missing arm?

Decades after the death of renowned Shakespearean scholar Dr. Marshall Emerson, McMaster University library and bookstore staff begin producing replica versions of his coveted text (THE TEMPEST) on a newly acquired Espresso Book Machine. Emerson, who was also known as Professor Prospero, returns, intent to put a stop to this “desecration” of his precious text. The story is told via the present day vengeance-inspired return of the ghost as well as flashbacks to Emerson's life as well as to librarian Richard Hamill's experiences on campus. This particular scene illustrates Hamill's first encounter with the ghost.
