Who is Travis?

When I started writing The Dreamcatcher, I only had Ellen in mind. Then Travis appeared to me – this hippy-type aging biker with fading blond hair, a droopy mo’ and an unkempt beard – the movie Easy Rider came to mind. Travis is a Vietnam vet who seems to be linked to Ellen thriough her nightmares.

The Good Sister

Romance

A beautiful Scottish based wartime sage that fuses the past with the present through the love stories of two unforgettable women, who are both called Isobel. In 1938, as the world hurtled towards war, twenty-year-old Isobel MacDonald fell madly in love. But fate and her own actions conspired to deny her the happiness she yearned for. Many years later, plagued with regrets and with a shrill voice from the past ringing in her ears, she documents the events that shaped her life. In 2015, sixty-five-year-old Bel Davison returns from Australia to her native Scotland to visit her terminally ill aunt. Reading Isobel’s memoir, she is beset with memories of her own childhood and overcome with guilt. When she meets her aunt’s solicitor, events seem to spiral out of control and, almost against her will, she finds herself drawn to this enigmatic Scotsman. What is it that links these two women across the generations? Can the past influence the future?

Isobel

The character of Isobel MacDonald was inspired by my aunt who loved to tell the story of her ill-fated romance. In The Good Sister, Bel Davison takes a trip to Scotland to visit her terminally ill aunt and her aunt’s story is my aunt’s story. Writing it meant I also took a trip down memory lane to revisit my Scottish childhood and to discover what it was like to live in Glasgow during WW2.

The Story of Isobel

The character of Isobel MacDonald – the older Isobel – was inspired by my aunt who loved to tell the story of her ill-fated romance. I knew I wanted to write her story but, for a long time, wasn’t sure how to do so. Then, when writing my book Broken Threads, set in Sydney, Australia, I hit on the idea giving of one of the minor characters, Bel, an aged aunt in Scotland. In The Good Sister, Bel takes a trip to Scotland to visit her terminally ill aunt and her aunt’s story is my aunt’s story. Writing it meant I also took a trip down memory lane to revisit my Scottish childhood.
