Becoming Mortal
Maya is part of a culture called the People, descendants of the Seven Sisters who were cursed to immortality for avenging the brutal murders of their parents. In this passage, Maya explains some of the key points to the curse, and in particular what each Daughter must do to break the curse. The ramifications are much deeper than merely becoming a mortal. It is only after the curse is broken that a Daughter may bear sons. Until that time, she may only bear Daughters. Of course, not every Daughter wishes to become mortal, which is another story entirely.
