After her family's murder when she was thirteen, college student JULIE FAULKNER moved to Newton Grove, North Carolina, to live with her grandfather, a man she had met only a handful of times. Julie learns of her grandfather's imminent death as Hurricane Florence crashes into the North Carolina coast, causing flooding and devastation. With her grandfather lying in a nursing home fighting to stay alive, Julie begins the clean-up and recovery. When her contractor discovers two skeletons under the living room floor, Julie calls Detective Ryerson to help clear her name. The police want Julie and her grandfather for murder. Julie wants answers. Ryerson begins searching for answers, and the more information he uncovers, the more convinced he knows the truth. As the investigation progresses, so does Ryerson's feelings for Julie. The more he discovers, the harder it will become to persuade her of not only the truth about her grandfather but also his feelings for her. A lifetime of death surrounds her grandfather, and Ryerson has no choice but to lay out all his cards and hope that Julie will accept both the evidence and him.
