Ralic is the latest in the town's long line of overlord-slaying heroes- obviously he thinks he's pretty hot stuff. The problem here is that once he goes off on his once-in-a-lifetime quest to go kill such an overlord as mentioned in the legends, he makes a discovery that throws his entire view of the world off balance- threatening his wife, child, and everyone he's ever known. A short fantasy for any who love fairy tales, illusions, and just a hint of love.

Inspiration for the story
In its developing stages I really wanted a story that had a good deal of generic fantasy tropes: The young hero, using the legendary blade to slay the dark lord and save everyone, but I knew I wanted a different twist on it. What if this dark lord were of the smarter sort? Of a less physical persuasion, and more manipulative, more tactical? Certainly someone so evil having lived for such a long time would have had a good deal of time to thing his situation over a good deal, no?
