I lived most of my adult life in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. A lot of people in that area, including many of my friends and family, work for the federal government in various capacities. While the man in this novel is a fictional character, his story is quite plausible. A former CIA operative, he is now a family man, working in the private sector. He thought all that was well behind him, ancient history. Until he is introduced to a foreign diplomat at a party--the ambassador from a violence-torn South American country, whose government is now struggling to maintain a fragile peace between left-wing insurgents and right-wing extremists. The problem is the ex-spy used to know this ambassador, but by a different name and under very different circumstances.
