Reluctant Warriors

History

Each of the men depicted here—Joseph “Chip” Wiley, Jimmy DeValery, Harry Conners, and Theodore Rodgers—had lives, families, and careers they left behind. But they were not the only ones to report for duty: their families also had to fight daily battles through hardships, through defeats, through loss.

The Strafing Run at Wewak

In this book I am interested in what our World War II relatives had to go through in their time in service. It is hard for us to imagine from this distance in time that they had the same hopes and fears we did. I hope this makes their sacrifice more real to you. Wewak is a city on the eastern coast of New Guinea, and was part of General MacArthur's push to the Philippines.
