Triptych

Humor & Entertainment

New publishing technologies and pressing personal issues cause crazy angst in the lives of three people. Hannah moves from New Jersey to Phoenix to become a newspaper press room supervisor, a job she's not sure she's qualified to do. Warrior, a typesetter at the newspaper, grew up as a tattoo'd "jungle boy" circus performer who later joined the Marines. His hopes for the supervisor promotion have been dashed by Hannah's arrival. Declan, a drunken motorcycle mechanic, was Hannah's first love back in NJ. Now living in Phoenix, he sees his opportunity to get Hannah back, but has he really matured? Is love even possible in all this mess? Technology is also an enemy here. What will the typesetting department do when the newspaper finishes its automation?

Hannah Meets Warrior

Hannah and Warrior have a 'cute meet' here. Warrior is up for a promotion at the newspaper, but Hannah has just driven across country to take that job. In their initial meet, Warrior is the he-man, taking care of Hannah, a mere woman. Later, their situation is reversed when Hannah becomes his supervisor in the newspaper's print shop. Hannah is good at her job, but her insecurities get in her own way. Warrior is disconnected from people, but longs for someone to call 'family.' The third person in the triangle is Declan, who is mentioned here. He is a drunken womanizer who also is Hannah's first love back in New Jersey and currently Warrior's mechanic. These people need to sort out their feelings for one another, and find new jobs with the advent of automation and computerization at the newspaper. Every aspect of their lives is up for scrutiny and change.

Commune

Humor & Entertainment

COMMUNE is the story of an apple commune and the disparate group of wanderers who end up there. The commune becomes a microcosm of conflicts: dedicated vs. slacking, honest vs. traitorous, hopeful vs. cynical, and most importantly, connected vs. disconnected. Is one woman's vision enough to carry the apple farm to a comfortable prosperity? In this piece of ensemble fiction, the diverse cast of characters includes Momo, the founder of the commune and legal owner; Maia, a former business school roommate, who has something to hide; Linda, another college roommate, who thinks a commune would be a fun vacation; Bobby and Baz, fraternal twins who have a differing view of farming; Dan, the supplies delivery man, who loves the parade of women who come and go at the commune; Dulcie, a bitter, displaced chef; Kick, a self-styled Buddhist; and many others. The future of the commune often hangs by a thread. Will it be the local tax assessor, the attorney and private detective, or the IRS, who close the place down? Or not? Who can Momo count on for help when the going gets rough?

Chapter 1: Momo's Commune

My goal was to do a piece of 'ensemble fiction' highlighting the standard types of people who were drawn to commune life: the idealist, the mooch, the artist, the chef, the tree-hugger, the criminal in hiding, the free love enthusiast, etc. Momo's purchase of the apple farm triggers big changes in the lives of many people, including the lawyer, the IRS agent, the visiting friend, and, of course, Momo herself.
