Lustre (A Witchlight Novella)

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Witching for a living is hard. Witching after your werewolf girlfriend opts for ex is harder. Witching as an escape, now that's impossible. Just ask Nilla Hayes. It takes a special kind of very bad day to break the one rule that every witch has. Never⸺and I mean never, never⸺work for angels. Throw in a dream thief, dates with death and destiny, and you have the perfect formula for a very, very bad day. Even when it's all expenses paid. You can't cash a check from the other side. When you witch in haste...your regrets might make the obituaries.

Book Bubbles from Lustre (A Witchlight Novella)

First impressions count...

I wrote this scene knowing that it was a significant one for Nilla, my witchy protagonist, and the woman that would become that staple of all good lives...the instant and forever bestie. This was the moment they first met and it was an important scene for me. I'm a pantser, but I don't think any pantser goes into a book without some idea of what is going to be in it. Sometimes those things don't make it, or don't turn out how you thought they would...but I just knew that Nilla and Livia would meet over coffee and that it would turn out BFFs forever... And it was...and they did.

Summer is not my season...

I've never liked the heat. It's always been oppressive, uncomfortable, and best experienced through other people's stories... However, I do have some fond memories of hot, hot, hot summery days...how they often ended with a refreshing, cool thunderstorm...and lightning strikes blazing through the darkened sky. This opening scene was inspired by those days, when I couldn't wait for the crash of thunder, the blinding bolts from the heavens, and the blissful cool it brought with it. It was also, I thought, the perfect setting for a witch to find herself snared by an angel... Take Nilla's advise though...never work for angels.
