Espionage was nothing new to Captain Larry McGraw and the crew of the USS Charlotte, a Los Angeles--class fast attack submarine. But this mission certainly was. Docked onto the hull of his sub was the new, state-of-the-art Advanced SEAL Delivery System, complete with 16 highly trained SEALs. Orders from the White House were simple, yet clear. Penetrate the Bo Hai Bay--a mere hundred miles from Beijing--and linger while the SEALS conduct nighttime missions. Simple, as long as they weren't detected. But if spotted inside the shallow bay, the orders were clear. McGraw couldn't let the Charlotte or the ASDS fall into Chinese hands, even if it meant destroying both.

Fact or Fiction?
When writing Time Bomb Ticking, I found it hard to believe that the United States government would spend one billion on a new SEAL delivery system like the ASDS and then cancel the program because the prototype suffered a major fire. Has our government, or Americans for that matter, become so weak that they quit at the first sign of failure? Or is my character Lieutenant Steven Bellior right--that the ASDS program is still functioning under a Top Secret Classification? It makes one wonder what the truth is ... or isn't.
China vs. The United States. Is the Spratly Islan
In my novel, Time Bomb Ticking, Captain McGraw and the USS Charlotte are tasked to penetrate China’s Bo Hai Bay in a daring mission of espionage. To clear the bay of Chinese naval ships, the Pentagon stages war games near the Spratly Islands. To quote one of my characters, Admiral Donavan, “The damn thieves are trying to muscle in on the Reed Bank oil that belongs to the Philippines and he (the president) wants to send them a ‘hands off’ message.” I wrote that back in 2012. This summer we witnessed headline news as the Chinese continued to construct an airfield atop Fiery Cross Reef despite international objections. Not only will this airstrip give them military superiority in the region, but it will extend their exclusive territorial sovereignty, thereby allowing them to lay claim to the Reed Bank oil. That oil reserve is estimated by some to be the fourth largest reserve in the world. In 1990 when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, President George Herbert Walker Bush responded with overwhelming force in Operation Desert Storm. Over the past two years, President Obama has failed to prevent the Chinese from island building and shows little interest in resolving the problem before his term expires. Most difficult scene
What was the most difficult thing/scene to write in this story? Describing the inside of a Los Angeles class submarine. Just a bit tricky without ever having been on one.

Review by By Thomas A. Dwyer: Being an old Air Force pilot, I don't spend too much time reading novels about our Silent Service. This is not to slight our submariners. They have and still do a great and thankless job. A friend recommended I read Time Bomb Ticking. I did so and rate it right up there with Tom Clancy's HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. It's hard to put down once you get into it. Very believable, very suspenseful. Believe it or not, it's a first novel by a man whose main interest is farming. Well done, Mr. Laney.
