At Amber Bay, a grand house in Melbourne, Annie, the assistant cook, is looking after Dr Alexander Townsend, who has suffered a head injury. He is the doctor who'd looked after the smallpox victims when Annie was on board the 'Orsova' on its voyage to Australia. In this chapter Annie, a newly-married woman, has the merest flicker of an impossible attraction between herself and Dr Townsend, but she has not admitted it.

Indecision
Annie' Story was instigated by my own grandparents who were in service and sailed to Melbourne on the Orsova in 1913, to 'better themselves'. They came home after seven years, bringing their 2 year old son, Harry, who became my father! I won't tell you if Annie and Ferguson (her new husband) return to England!
