Ghost Mortem

Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

Dead exes don’t text… but they can haunt.

Everly Dupree’s fresh start is turning into a paranormal rom-com nightmare.

Husband in bed with her best friend? Check. Fired from her job at his family’s company? Check. Moved back to her hometown only to discover her parents rented out her childhood bedroom? Seems par for the course. But it gets worse when she checks into the Bide-A-Way Motel and stumbles upon her high school ex-boyfriend’s definitely murdered body in the room next door.

And also his ghost. Who only she can see. Talk about a plot twist.

Now, Hudson Montayne is dead, pushy, and somehow even more annoying than he was at seventeen. And he refuses to rest until Everly pieces together the clues and finds his killer. The problem? She’s no detective, and his ghostly “help” is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

Everly doesn’t want to solve murders. She doesn’t want to talk to restless spirits. She just wants a cozy, quiet life, a glass of wine, and maybe five minutes to herself. Turns out, ghosts rarely take no for an answer, and she quickly realizes if she doesn’t do what Hudson wants, she’ll never get rid of him. Between dodging nosy neighbors, navigating endless gossip, and juggling family drama, and enduring Hudson’s sarcastic commentary from beyond the grave, Everly’s sanity is hanging by a thread.

And that’s before people start suspecting she knows more about Hudson’s mysterious and perplexing death than she’s letting on.

But small-town secrets rarely stay hidden, and Hudson’s murder is just the beginning. The more Everly uncovers, the clearer it becomes—someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden.

Fresh start? More like paranormal purgatory. And in Mooselick River, everyone’s watching.

Enter: One Annoying Ghost

This scene sets the tone for the whole series: humor meets heart meets haunted complications. Everly doesn’t want to talk to ghosts… but ghosts very much want to talk to her. This is the moment she realizes she doesn’t get a choice. I had so much fun writing her flustered reaction because beneath all that panic, she’s stronger than she gives herself credit for.
