Becoming Human

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Two Worlds. Two Species. One Terrifying Secret. In 2163, a polluted and overcrowded Earth forces humans to search for a new home. But the exoplanet they target, Exilon 5, is occupied. Having already begun a massive relocation programme, Bill Taggart is sent to monitor the Indigenes, the race that lives there. He is a man on the edge. He believes the Indigenes killed his wife, but he doesn’t know why. His surveillance focuses on the Indigene Stephen, who has risked his life to surface during the daytime. Stephen has every reason to despise the humans and their attempts to colonise his planet. To protect his species from further harm, he must go against his very nature and become human. But one woman holds a secret that threatens Bill’s and Stephen’s plans, an untruth that could rip apart the lives of those on both worlds. BECOMING HUMAN, part one in the Exilon 5 trilogy, is a dystopian action adventure that you won’t want to put down.

Raw memories

Bill's thoughts are consumed with memories of his wife. Had it not been for the Indigenes, they might still have had a decent future together. Forgiveness is a stretch too far for him.

Getting close...

Bill combs through data about the Indigene race, in preparation for the expected meeting between an adult Indigene and a young boy the next day. Memories of his wife still tear at him, but he must keep it together. A rare chance to capture the Indigene fills him with hope ... and thoughts of revenge.

Becoming Human

Stephen uses recent footage of the humans, a race that they only know as 'Surface Creatures', to practice aligning his movements to theirs. If he is to be successful and make contact with one of them the next day, he must perfect their habits.

Dalliance with Danger

Bill Taggart recalls one of his more difficult investigative cases for the World Government: Mr. Larry Hunt. Influential and dangerous, Bill quickly understands how far a man like that is prepared to go, and how little protection his work, and title, actually gives him out in the field.

Changing Appearances

In order to surface safely, Stephen must become human. But he struggles with some of the changes he must make. The artificial skin he tries on feels heavy and restrictive. If he could, he would surface in his true form but there are more pressing issues that trump his insecurities about his new appearance.

The Indigenes

In this Chapter we first meet Stephen, one of the Indigenes on Exilon 5. He is about to travel to the surface of Exilon 5 where the atmosphere and harsh sun will try to kill him. But he has to go. He must help his race to survive the ongoing threats posed by the humans.

Who are the Indigenes?

Bill Taggart is investigating the race that lives on Exilon 5. Why? Because the World Government on Earth believes them to be a threat. Because Bill believes they killed his wife, a soldier who was stationed on Exilon 5.

Will Exilon 5 save the human race?

As Bill Taggart, the main protagonist, sits and watches the world go by on Exilon 5, he notices the same cracks beginning to appear in society, the ones that had been present on Earth. Old habits die hard. Some habits live on, he realises.

What's Next For Humankind?

Becoming Human begins with an explosion and sets the scene for the rest of the story. Humans, struggling to survive on a dystopian Earth have located Exilon 5, a new planet highly suitable for terra forming. But the presence of an indigenous species makes their relocation plans that much more strained. Difficult decisions are made, casualties are high, and humans continue with their plans, unchallenged. But the repercussions will only reveal themselves in the years that follow. Becoming Human is a story about the humans and the indigenous race as they face up to the hardest battle of all. The battle for survival.
