Three years after Hobson lost his wife and his job, the ex-cop departs on a much-needed vacation to Europe, only to get trapped in Iceland after a glacial volcano awakes with a series of eruptions. Stuck at 66 Degrees North, where human behavior is as unpredictable as the weather, Hobson finds himself ensnared in a bizarre murder investigation involving Gummi, a road-weary homicide detective; Snorri, a brutal pimp; and Úlfar, a homicidal sheep farmer. As Hobson falls in with a group of enigmatic tourists trying to escape the volcanic aftermath, he must come to terms with his mysterious past if he is to survive the chase for a killer that pushes him to the edge of the inhabitable world.

The Harrowing Icelandic Landscape

How much suffering can a person endure before deciding to give up? Iceland’s history is full of harrowing, natural catastrophes. From a volcanic eruption in the late 1700s that blackened the sky, the volcanic winter destroying crops, livestock and nearly one-fourth of Iceland’s population to harsh winters causing starvation to wicked storms sinking fishing vessels and as a result forcing too many children to grow up without fathers, Icelanders have endured natural disasters on an epic scale. The characters in The Ring Road suffer personal traumas. Some give up. Some continue to slouch forward. This excerpt reveals what happens when a human being surrenders to fate. The image of a sheep farmer taking the life of his beloved farm dog seemed to be the lowest act of desperation and capitulation carried out by a man who sees himself with no future.
