Iceland Defrosted

Travel

This is the story of one Englishman’s obsession with a half-frozen, roughly duck-shaped island in the cold north Atlantic.

Best Little Record Store?

I'm a huge fan of record stores, and none more so than this little beaut. It hasn't escaped me that I'm writing this on Record Store Day.

Puffins fighting back!

Puffins have become the unofficial symbol for my book. I get emails about them, my Twitter avatar is a Puffin and I think that they might just get more attention than me. This is a neat little tale that I've been telling on my recent author talks - it always gets a laugh!

Hverarönd

The strangest, oddest place you've never seen. I really loved being here, apart from the strong smell of sulphur everywhere. It really was like being on an alien planet.

Icelandic skyr in NYC

Skyr is an Icelandic dairy product. It is delicious, and quintessentially Icelandic. I found out about an Icelander who was producing Skyr in New York. I was intrigued, and had to find out more.

Searching for Sea Monsters in Iceland

I had been planning this trip for many months, and yet, on arrival everything seemed to go wrong. The West Fjords are one of the more remote areas of Iceland, and they were initially unkind to me. Bíldudalur was a turning point - the Sea Monster Museum was exceptional, and unforgettable experience. Even for someone that doesn't believe in Sea Monsters.

Grímsey

I loved my trip to this frozen Icelandic outpost. Halla was a fantastic guide; proud of this quirky little island on the Arctic circle. The scenery was outstanding, although for me, the Puffins stole the day. My only regret is that I couldn't stay for longer. or forever.
