Intimate Moments with the World
I love this chapter, which might seem odd. I wrote it (and the following one) about my miscarriage and recovery in one sitting, and it was barely touched by my writing coach and three editors. These chapters were written from a very clear place about an experience I would never want, but would also never ask to change. Though that's not quite what I love so much. I love that it's a real accounting of a very intimate moment...me in the bathroom, searching for a fetus in the blood gushing from between my legs, then cleaning up after. My family, friends, and students will read this and...it's not the kind of thing I tend to share. So writing it feels vulnerable, and leaves me feeling very close to the reader. And that's what I want out of life these days: honesty, authenticity, and deep connection. This chapter is me doing my part, sharing with my community and hopefully comforting some strangers who can relate.
Why Plus One?
An inside secret: The title of this chapter and book was originally going to be The G-Word, but market research showed that "spiritual people" were offended by that word because it reminded them of the G-Spot. I didn't get it. Offended? By the G-Spot? Really? Let's get honest here, what in the world is offensive about that spot? There probably isn't a person on the planet who's discovered it and doesn't like it, right? But when my editor suggested Plus One, I gave up my argument. That title felt really perfect. And, I guess, more appropriate given the content. :)
