I wanted to introduce the Demon in a provocative manner that would leave the reader wondering if the event is real or not. It also allows the opportunity to give another character's perspective to a novel that is told primarily in the first person.
Building the intrigue
In this excerpt, the reader is learning along with Abbie that everything isn't quite as innocent as it seems. Although questions are being answered, those very answers are opening up new questions, encouraging both Abbie and the reader to want to delve deeper into the mystery.
