An unemployed stay-at-home-dad who reads the paper one morning to learn he is running for congress, a college freshman trying to find himself while meeting the love of his life, and a crazy old man who couldn't care about any of this all cross paths to show that we are never too old to come of age.
This is one of the first instances in the narrative when the "pieces" of Mike's life start to overlap. We get a little background into why, when he decides to become politically active, he is so aggressively outspoken. It is because he had kept that part of himself bottled up for so long. He was untrue to himself for so long, that he lost himself completely.
