A New York Slice of Life
One of the more fun parts of writing New York Dolls was infusing elements of my own New York City experience into the narrative. In this scene, my main character, Denton Hodges, is trying to find her bearings after the unexpected events of her first major reporting assignment for Glitter magazine. Her boss has instructed her and her colleagues many times not to insert themselves into a story, but when Denton makes it to the exclusive after-party for the fashion show she's covering, it's clear the story she's writing is taking on a life of its own. The after-party described in this scene is held at a posh nightclub in the Meatpacking District. When I lived in New York City, I celebrated a bachelorette party with some girlfriends at a club just like the one Denton's at. My friends and I danced 'til dawn and enjoyed a great girls' weekend. For Denton, though, her evening out in Meatpacking ends with a decidedly different twist.
