PENDOMUS

Science Fiction & Fantasy

A secret hidden in plain sight. A devastating attack. And a world hanging in the balance. There are a lot of things I wish I’d known earlier—but three top my “wow, she was naïve” list. First—there are others on Pendomus. Second—a prophecy is in motion & I hold the key to the survival of literally everything. Third—I'm being hunted by a madman who is desperately trying to wipe me from existence. So yeah, no pressure

I'd Remember Her

When I first started writing Pendomus, I knew I would have big moments unanswered in the first book, but reveal them throughout the rest of the trilogy. This is one of them. If you haven't read all the way to Book 3 (or maybe even if you have!), this is one of those moments that has significance later on.

The Labots Descend

In this scene, Runa and Trae are trying to escape the Helix without being tagged by the faceless mercenaries -- the Labots. Originally, this scene didn't exist. Runa's mother actually helped them get out safely. However, I knew if I was to follow through with my plans for the rest of the series, I needed to make this scene more powerful. It resonates beyond Book 1 and into the rest of the trilogy, if you pay attention. ;)

Awkward Silence

I originally wrote this scene from both Runa and Traeton's perspective. It was fun for me to know what was really going on inside Trae's mind, even though Runa was completely clueless (as you see here). Ultimately, I decided the scene had to be done from Runa's perspective, seeing as it was her struggle to overcome her naivety that I was working on portraying. But man, knowing how uncomfortable he was (because he was uncomfortable with how much he liked her) was a lot of fun to mess with! :D

What's her story?

I loved painting the dynamic for this scene and setting up the awkwardness for Traeton that continues throughout the book. His friends couldn't be more different from him, yet they work to create a fun, and interesting group. I think you'll agree.

"What if she's not sympathetic to our situation?"

The main character, Runa, had recently been attacked--and Traeton, the other perspective this story is told from, has brought her back to his camp. Unfortunately, not everyone is as thrilled as he is. For me, one of the things I love most about this scene is the emerging dynamic between Trae trying to protect Runa--even from his friend Kani's super skepticalness. It was almost as much fun to write as the more...awkward moments. But not quite. ;)

Manifesting Destiny

There's more to this moment than originally meets the eye. For most readers, it won't make sense until finishing up with Revolutions: Book 3 of the Pendomus Chronicles, coming out on November 21st, 2017. Willing death

This first chapter was part of a much larger scene. In fact, the first chapter was originally my fifth chapter, but due to the desire of my editors to bring the action up front, this became my introduction to Runa's world. I always liked this scene. Being completely frozen in terror as an invisible creature's saliva pools across my face freaks me the hell out. Doesn't it freak you out, too?
