Opening it all
The excerpt is from the opening of Ruination. We find five year old Nessa's been left to care for her newborn sister as a result of the sudden death of their mother. It's just the start of Nessa's responsibilities that she must shoulder, all the while feeling the pressures of a government that could destroy her if they knew her secrets.
The plunge
In this excerpt we follow Ty as he makes his way toward saving the one person he's sacrificed everything for, Nessa. Heavy rains have fallen for weeks straight leaving the rivers treacherous to cross as rapids break over jagged rocks. He has no choice but to try to cross the raging waters even if he dies trying.
Heart on the line
In this excerpt we learn a bit more about Nessa's guarded tendencies. We get an explanation as to why she finds it difficult to fall in love, it's a moment of honesty and vulnerability that is natural after the loss Nessa faced at such a young age.

Everything for the citizens of the divide revolves around the leap-test. It is the one test that will dictate each citizens labor roles, housing division, and potential mates. For one boy and girl it will be the only way they can leave their sector and move to Central to begin a better life. In this scene Nessa has just arrived for her leap-test. On her seventeenth birthday she finds herself strapped to a chair and possibly failing the one test that could set her free. This excerpt takes you inside Nessa's head and let's you see her fear.
