A Leaf That Floats Upstream

Self-Help

"A Leaf That Floats Upstream," is a challenge, it is intentionally controversial and directed to jolt people out of their apathy. As the title suggests, the book goes against the flow and appeals to the rebel that resides somewhere within us all, yet rejects impositions the minorities seem to think they can inflict on humanity. This is about choice, your choice, do you care enough about the future of all life on Earth to make the commitment which is becoming so vital to the generations yet to be born? In writing this book, in many ways I am challenging the very pillars of our civilization, institutions which have grown into the monstrosities which loom over us and control our lives.

Avarice, Arogance and Apathy = Oblivion

Do we chose the book we are going to write, or does the book choose us? In my case, I believe that it was the latter. Perhaps advancing years gives us each understanding, (I have no intention of ever getting old) a changing perspective and allows us time to stop and observe. “A Leaf That Floats Upstream” is a result of that observation and analysis. It is not just a straight from the shoulder, honest appraisal of how the world appears to me at this present time, it is an appeal for you to make the choices that are essential to ensure that there will still be a world here to support the yet unborn generations. Since I am promoting awareness and action, I make no apology that the book is confrontational, controversial and is written without deference to modern conventions. It is too late to be concerned with offending delicate sensibilities. The changes in purpose and direction for us all to adopt are essential now, if not yesterday. The choices we make today as the modern generation, will decide whether our Earth and all its life forms will have a future. That responsibility rests on all our shoulders, equally.

A Leaf on a Quest

Literature & Fiction

This sequel to ‘A Leaf That Floats Upstream” is concerned with many of the same concerns regarding issues and problems facing humanity and our environment, but where the first book assumed a position, outlining the issues in a confrontational, controversial manner, intended to shock and was always meant as a direct challenge, “A Leaf on a Quest” looks at why the problems exist, what are the causes? The more these problems are examined, the more incongruous they appear. What perverse characteristic in human nature could possibly empower civilization, the instrument of the people, to wantonly destroy all that is vital to safeguard the continuance of humanity and all life on the planet: the planet which itself was the source of all living things that inhabit its surface? It is a living, breathing, self-consuming conundrum, one, which is at first glance, impossible to accept, it is just too ridiculous to be credible. Yet it does exist, it is all around us, and we have been and are responsible for the creation of this embodiment of crass stupidity. Every single problem which is currently a threat to our continued existence has been caused by humanity, or can we attribute responsibility to that mindless machine, civilization. It is all a result of attitude, the attitude of every living person, society and nation on the face of the Earth.

The Quest is a search for truth

Why it now, that truth is so hard to find, is civilization based on lies? Really we shouldn't even have to ask, but it is a valid question and it is applicable to almost every facet of our lives. So just for a moment, think about it, who do you trust. OK let us consider some examples, and then you will see why the questions asked in this book are in your interests. Would you these days, allow your child to walk to school and home alone, would you let him/her go to a movie with a friend? Another example, do you believe the advertisements on TV or in the shopping mall. Do you believe your bank manager when he tells you it is OK to go over your over-draft limit, or get another credit card? Can you see where this is going? You elect someone to represent you in government, do they? When the oil companies decide that they haven’t made enough money yet and tell you it will be quite safe for them to drill test well at your local beach, do you believe them? I don’t.

Five Million Years On

Literature & Fiction

The Waterborn Saga is a fictional continuation of two previous narrative non-fiction books, relating to social and environmental problems. These in turn highlight factors and issues that almost certainly; do threaten the future of life on Earth. So there is, even in these works of fiction, a message, perhaps a reminder, a warning to us all. Having said that, the story takes us into the lives and minds of both those who, even as they are facing certain death, are going to extraordinary lengths to reach out to those they believe will come after them. We, to some extent follow the stages of regeneration which produces a new species, then become part of their lives as they evolve, sharing in their joys and the sorrows, their successes and their failures. It is impossible to assign this book any particular genre because it covers many. Consider, mental telepathy and telekinetic levitation, venturing into the shadowy realm of the paranormal, using our psychic powers in battles pitched against the dark powers of the occult, science fiction as our evolving race become part of an advanced space travelling Empire. Fantasy and mythology are an integral part of their ancestry, and as they reach millions of years into the future, they merge as one, forming the story of which we are part; we share in the lives of the Waterborn as they carry us into the worlds of the future.

To Live is to experience eternity

For a million years after the extinction of man and all life on Earth, the planet appeared to be dead, a bereft and barren orb circling its sun for no purpose. Was it dead or dormant, healing, allowing the poisons and contaminants which had destroyed a civilization to purge themselves from its surface? Again, as they had millions of years before, miniscule particles of life found nutrients and an existence hidden deep in deposits of primeval ooze. They formed a promise, a commitment that again Earth would again be clad with a covering of lush green plant life, where insects, birds and animals would develop and breed beneath its shade. The rains would come again, rivers would flow and clouds would shelter the land from the rays of the sun. Lifeless, stagnant oceans would again teem with wondrous creatures and waves would at last fall crashing and foaming on sandy shores. From the bountiful depths life would emerge and evolve to walk on the lands. Planet Earth would again be the sapphire blue planet orbiting the galaxy sharing its vibrant light of life.

Words of Wisdom from the past

We live now, totally immersed in the technology of our age, attributes we once had are disappearing and the magic of those distant times is fading into the shadows. But don’t you wish sometimes, that you could again travel to those wondrous places, soar with the creatures of your dreams as you did at that time when your parents stories had meaning. There is a truth which is handed down from elders to the young, hidden in the tales of old, of ancient mythology and the heroes we once admired. There were rules and dictates which still apply today, a morality which is now scorned. Those heroes and heroines set standards which were applicable in our everyday lives. Where are they now? Perhaps in this story there has been an effort to recapture those values, to allow our heroes to set standards to which we could all aspire, to permit our minds to again reach for the stars knowing that we will be protected. I hope you will enjoy traveling with me through the void, welcome.
