I squeeze my way around the tall herd to get to her. Where is it? I can feel it, someone, walking through the crowds, stalking, hunting…
I’m caught at the tail end of the line, most kids are already at their tables, gnawing on food. My hands ache for a rock that I could use to bash in my head, to stop the throbbing, to stop the feeling that I am being watched, to stop the sinking.
I’m knocked into the serving table by something on my left. The tower of trays rattle as I hit it.
“Hey!” I rub my hip, heart pounding, and look down to see a little boy. He is a freshman, maybe, chubby freckled cheeks and reddish hair but wrong. So, so wrong.
“He waits.” The voice is three times too deep for his body. He hits each letter with a sharp tone, blue eyes practically glowing, looking darker… purple. “He will rip you into pieces, tear your flesh from your bones, six wings and steel await you, Ahuvati.”
I gasp. My legs melt and stomach seizes. Everything inside of me shatters, falling through the floor. Leaving nothing more than the outline of a girl. I scream.
“Get out of here you sick freak!” Nicole shoves him away from me. His eyes are locked on mine. The tension breaks. The feeling, the sick feeling like something else is here stops.
Then he falls. He falls to the floor. Tiny hands wrapped around his stomach. He screams. Cries. My heart leaps up and crashes back down. God, he’s screaming. Like he hurts. Hurts like nothing else.
The lunch aides run. The crowd clears about the boy, Nicole and I watching, helpless, as he start to vomit. Crying. Vomiting. Screaming. Like he hurts. Like he’s suffering. Vomiting. Everywhere.
I shake. His little body contorts, twists against the hold of the lunch monitor, straining to see me, to hold my eyes as he goes.
“Who is he?” I ask, voice small.
“A moron trying to scare you.” Nicole grabs my face in her hands, forcing me to meet her eyes. “You ok? He’s just some stupid kid.”
